• The difference between 304 and 316 steel

    In the world of metal materials, 304 and 316 steel are the two most common types of stainless steel. They differ in their chemical composition, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. Understanding the differences between the two materials is critical for engineering design, manufacturing, and material selection.

     

    1) Chemical composition

    304 steel is a widely used stainless steel that contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel, as well as a small amount of carbon, silicon, manganese and other elements. Because it contains enough chromium, it can form a protective oxide film with oxygen, thereby protecting the steel body from corrosion.

    The 316 steel is added 2% molybdenum element on the basis of 304 steel. The addition of molybdenum enhances the corrosion resistance of the steel, especially in chloride environments.

     

    2) Mechanical property

    In terms of mechanical properties, the difference between 304 and 316 steel is not large. Both have good strength, toughness and ductility and are suitable for a variety of structural applications. However, because 316 steel contains more molybdenum, its resistance to stress corrosion cracking is stronger.

     

    3) Corrosion resistance

    Corrosion resistance is the most significant advantage of 316 steel. In the Marine environment, industrial atmosphere and high temperature water, the corrosion resistance of 316 steel is far higher than that of 304 steel. This is because the molybdenum element can cooperate with the chromium element in the steel to form a more stable oxide film, thus enhancing the corrosion resistance of the steel.

     

    4) Use

    Due to the differences in chemical composition, mechanical properties and corrosion resistance between 304 steel and 316 steel, their uses are also different. 304 steel is widely used in construction, furniture, kitchenware, medical equipment and other fields. Because of its excellent corrosion resistance, 316 steel is widely used in chemical equipment, seawater desalination plants, ships, thermal power stations and other fields.

     

    5) Sum up

     

    In general, 304 and 316 steels are similar in many ways, but their most significant difference is corrosion resistance. When choosing which material to use, consider its use as well as the expected environmental conditions. In situations where high corrosion resistance is required, such as chemical equipment or Marine environments, 316 steel is the more ideal choice. Under general environmental conditions, 304 steel is still widely used because of its low cost and good performance.
