• What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel sheet?

    04-15-2024

Stainless steel is a popular material used in various industries due to its corrosion resistance, durability, and versatility. Among the various types of stainless steel, 304 and 316 are the most commonly used. While both types of stainless steel share similar properties, there are some key differences between them that can affect their suitability for particular applications.

From the composition point of view

304 stainless steel plate is mainly composed of iron, chromium and nickel, of which the content of chromium is about 18-20%, the content of nickel is about 8-10%. The 316 stainless steel plate adds molybdenum on this basis, and its content is about 2-3%. This added element makes 316 stainless steel plate have better corrosion resistance.

From the performance point of view

304 stainless steel plate has good corrosion resistance, processability and toughness, suitable for many conventional environments. However, in some special environments, such as seawater or chemical contact environment, 304 stainless steel plate may not meet the long-term corrosion resistance needs. In contrast, 316 stainless steel plate has stronger corrosion resistance, especially in the environment containing chloride ions, its corrosion resistance is significantly better than 304 stainless steel plate.

From the application point of view

304 stainless steel plate because of its good cost performance and wide applicability, is widely used in construction, food, medical and other fields. 316 stainless steel plate because of its better corrosion resistance, commonly used in Marine engineering, chemical processing and other more harsh environment occasions.

    In summary

304 and 316 stainless steel plates have obvious differences in composition, performance and application. When choosing stainless steel plates, it is necessary to choose the appropriate type according to the specific use environment and needs. In conventional environments, 304 stainless steel is an affordable option; In special environments where stronger corrosion resistance is needed, 316 stainless steel is more suitable.
